What is Transliteration and When Should You Use It?

Transliteration is the process of representing the sounds of one language using the script of another. For Surah Yaseen, a Roman English transliteration writes the Arabic pronunciation of each word and ayat using English letters — for example, writing “Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem” instead of the Arabic بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ.

Transliteration is a helpful bridge for Muslims who wish to recite Surah Yaseen but have not yet learned to read Arabic script. It is commonly used by new Muslims, children learning the Quran for the first time, and Urdu or other language speakers who are literate in Roman script. However, Islamic scholars universally emphasise that transliteration should be a temporary learning tool, not a permanent substitute for learning to read Arabic. The Quran in its original Arabic is the word of Allah and should be learned in its original form.

Important Limitations of Transliteration

Every transliteration system has limitations. Arabic has sounds that do not exist in English — the letters ع (‘Ayn), غ (Ghain), ح (Haa), خ (Kha), ق (Qaf), and ص (Sad) among others have no English equivalents. Any transliteration of these sounds is an approximation. This is why scholars emphasise learning the Arabic script — because the actual sounds of Quranic Arabic require proper guidance from a qualified Quran teacher (Qari) and cannot be fully captured in Roman letters.

Additionally, Tajweed rules — the rules of proper Quranic pronunciation including elongations (madd), nasal sounds (ghunnah), and merging of letters (idgham) — cannot be adequately represented in transliteration. A person who recites only from transliteration will inevitably make pronunciation errors that may alter the meaning of the words.
